Work on Jefferson’s Masterpiece Temporarily Interrupted

I have a confession to make. I was not able to spend much time last week working on Jefferson’s Masterpiece. My goal was to finish the first edit and begin the second read-through. However, I spent most of the week getting ready to contact year-round Christmas stores and independent bookstores about carrying Nick & Sadie, the Christmas novel I published last year. In addition, I spent May 7th working at our church’s BBQ Fundraiser for Missions that is conducted semiannually.

My goal for this week is to spend as much time as possible editing the manuscript, while I contact six Christmas stores and independent bookstores along the North Carolina coast.

"Jefferson’s Masterpiece"

Jefferson’s Masterpiece is the story of Thomas Jefferson writing the Declaration of Independence. It weaves fact with fiction to provide a daily insight into Jefferson’s life that begins on the day he agreed to write the Declaration of Independence and ends when members of the Second Continental Congress signed America’s founding document. It will be illustrated with contemporary art and historical documents. Written for 9- to 12-year-olds, the book will include an appendix of historical data that provides additional learning opportunities to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the Declaration of Independence.

Prelude to Independence

British Troops Moved to New York
June 30, 1776

British Major General William Howe evacuated Boston on March 17, 1776, after American troops secured and mounted artillery on Dorchester Heights that overlooked Boston. Howe reacted by moving his army to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he began to plan a campaign to occupy New York. The goal was to divide the colonies militarily and strategically and to take control of the Hudson River.

After a brief stay, General Howe moved 130 transports carrying 9,300 troops south and arrived off the coast of New York City on June 30. They disembarked on Staten Island without any American opposition.

General George Washington had anticipated Howe’s move to New York and marched the Continental Army to the city where he occupied Manhattan and Long Island. He ordered the construction of Fort Washington and Fort Lee along the Hudson River.

A large fleet commanded by his brother, Admiral Richard Howe, soon joined General Howe. Eventually, Howe’s army swelled to more than 31,000 troops, when the expedition that failed to capture Charleston arrived in New York.

The stage was being set for a major conflict between the Americans and the British.
